Fauna on the grounds include doves, free-roaming peacocks as well as raccoons and kitties! There are some automatic feeders that provide feed for all, but the thin, hungry kitties certainly seem to get the least of it with the raccoons on guard!

Beautiful gardens with a quaint restaurants and historic home tour.

A local treasure. Beautiful home and gardens. Nice place to eat and gift shop. You could easily spend half the day around the facility or stay over night in their accommodations. Reasonably priced.

We went there for a picnic. We had kids with us. We took the guided tour. It's crucial to arrive on time for the tour, the guide got angry with us. The jefferson house tour was enjoyable. Good place to hike and lots of small historical viewpoints. It's a good idea to bring lunch and other picnic gears. The surprise addition was a hoard of beautiful peacocks roaming around.

The place wonderfully staffed and a gem to visit. They even have a few overnight cabins which seem nice. It was shown on a program I once watched about a salt mine collapse in the 80's and a story about an ornate Chinese Rice Vase which was recovered undamaged in the collapse which we viewed and so much other historical significance.

The entire island is actually a salt dome with a fascinating story. The optional mansion tour/cottage accomodations are equally historic and amidst beautiful landscaping and lush subtropical gardens with native and imported flora. A cafe and gift shop are also available.

All in all a lovely, pleasant weekend getaway. But while the owner seems to have a kind heart for the animals, may I suggest to also have a conscience by looking into spaying/neutering to control the cat population.

If historical homes is your thing, definitely check this one out. Beautiful home and lovely gardens. Wonderful history laid out by a knowledgeable tour guide. This story of the salt mine/lake incident is particularly interesting.
